Perfect Binding
Perfect binding is the glued, square-spined binding used on paperback books, catalogues, manuals and thick reports. The inner pages are milled along the back, notches are cut into the spine, and hot glue is forced into the notches and bonded to a soft or hard cover. Colorbourne Graphics perfect binds books on its own binding machine for Melbourne businesses.
Good to know before you print
- Allow 2 to 3 days for binding
- Talk to us before printing: the spine needs a strip left clear of ink for the glue to hold
- Uncoated inner paper binds best; the cover can be a separate hard or soft cover, or a self cover
- This is glue binding, not stitched (sewn) binding
Perfect binding questions
How many pages does a book need for perfect binding?
Enough to make a spine the glue can grip, which in practice means a spine of a few millimetres. Thinner booklets are better saddle stitched or spiral bound. Send us the page count and paper and we will tell you which binding suits.
Will a perfect bound book lie flat?
Not fully. A glued spine opens comfortably for reading but does not lie flat like a spiral bound book, which is why manuals that sit open on a desk are usually spiral bound and books that go on a shelf are perfect bound.
